My Teaching Philosophy

The role of the student within the educational process is to be an active learner within and outside the classroom. In order to do this, each student should be encouraged to bring in their own understanding of the world into the classroom and have the opportunity to analyze it. The learner’s role in the education process is also to learn the rules of society by socialising and learning to respect others, among many other things.

It is the teacher’s duty in the education process however, to ensure that the students are surrounded by a stimulating learning environment. The teacher is there to encourage learning and should give numerous opportunities for students to explore their curiosity. The teacher’s role is to promote a love of learning in his or her students by making the lessons interesting and enticing for the students. The teacher should also provide learning materials that will allow for students to manipulate their own learning and therefore acquire an ownership of their understanding. In addition, the teacher is also responsible for monitoring students’ success and improvement, as well as classroom management. Moreover, teachers should also be seen as an example of what society expects these young individuals to eventually become.

In addition, the content that should be included in the curriculum should of course be based on the Quebec Education Program but should be presented in the classroom with a creative flare in order to make the content of the lessons more motivating for students to learn. The teacher should take into account students’ interest when creating lesson plans in order to ensure that students undergo learning experiences that are more meaningful and memorable. It is also very important as a teacher to promote group work and active participation in class. Also, the students should be encouraged to take part in learning activities which can further stimulate their comprehension and curiosity.

In order for all of this to work, it is important to first have good classroom management. Without it, it is impossible to effectively teach a class. The teacher can use many different strategies to maintain control in the classroom and each teacher needs to use the method that he or she is the most comfortable with. In my case, I intend to use motivational strategies such as a point and chart system. If students can see their own progress and gain something from it in the end, they will be more inclined to behave and cooperate within the classroom. In order to have good classroom management, it is also important to administer discipline and be consistent and fair about it. It is important for the students to be constantly aware of the rules and of the consequences that will come if he or she refuses to abide by these rules.

Finally, as a teacher, I want to bring in as much creativity as possible into my classroom. I want to spark a love of learning in my students just as the teachers that I have had in elementary schools have sparked my love of learning. I believe that it is important for students to acquire this at a young age because it will motivate them to do their best which will in turn have them wanting to learn more in the future. In order to spark that love of learning, I want to make learning feel as a game where every student is treated as fairly as everyone else. In order to implement this, I would base my lessons and classroom management on positive reinforcement and on a reward system. To continue, since we live in a multicultural society, I also want to encourage diversity among my students’ beliefs and values without making the students feel as if one culture is more important or significant than another. Finally, I also want to be a teacher who is on the lookout for students who might need additional resources in order to reach their full potential while also accommodating students who may appear to be “gifted” learners by creating additional programs for them to do in order to keep them stimulated. Moreover, I also want to be a teacher who demonstrates a substantial amount of caring towards her students by being interested in them as not only students, but as children and human beings.
