First Field Experience

Mountainview Elementary school – Sept 2007 – 3 weeks

My first field experience took place almost as soon as I started the Kindergarten and Elementary Education program at McGill. I spent three weeks in a grade 3/4 French Second Language class. I had three groups of students in all. This field experience mostly involved observation and participation. I only got to teach one Art lesson at the end of my three weeks. After this stage I knew with certainty that I wanted to be a teacher.

Second Field Experience

St-Jude Elementary school – May 2009 – 3 weeks

For my second field experience, I was placed with a split 1/2 class and I loved it! My CT had over thirty years of experience and I learned a lot from her. Many of the strategies she used are the ones that I want to use in my future classroom. I taught about 70% of the time and it went very well. My stage ended on a sad note however because she learned that she was sick. She couldn’t finish the school year due to this and I ended up replacing her for the last two weeks of school in June. It was a great experience and I learned a great deal since I had to take over and figure out how to wrap up a school year. I worked a lot with the other teachers and it all worked out well.

Third Field Experience

St-Jude Elementary school – Sept 2009 – 13 weeks

I was placed in the same school for my third field experience. I was supposed to be with the same teacher again but since she wasn’t coming back for that school year, I was placed with the other grade one teacher. I was excited about teaching grade one because I wanted to know how to get students to start reading and writing. By November, I was amazed to see that they were actually reading and writing on their own! It was so rewarding! During the course of my stage, I took over teaching Mathematics, and Ethics, I also taught most of Language Arts. It was a great experience and it was after this stage that I felt that I was pretty much ready to take over my own classroom very soon.
